Bus carrying locals and migrants crashes in Mexico, killing 16

The migrants were traveling to an appointment with the United States Customs and Border Protection, according to Mexico's National Institute of Migration.

MEXICO CITY and LONDON -- At least 16 people were killed and 36 others were injured in a bus crash in central Mexico on Tuesday, authorities said.

A passenger bus carrying locals and migrants -- mostly from Venezuela -- collided with a trailer truck on the Cuacnopalan-Oaxaca highway near the border between the Mexican states of Oaxaca and Puebla early Tuesday morning, according to the Puebla state government.

The reason for the crash was unknown.

There were 52 people on board the bus, including 10 from Venezuela. The migrants were Traveling to an appointment with the United States Customs and Border Protection to legally enter the country, according to Mexico's National Institute of Migration.

Among the dead were 15 Mexican citizens and one Venezuelan national. Nine Venezuelans were among the injured, three of whom remain hospitalized in Tehuacan, the National Institute of Migration said.

U.S. Forces Fly in to Embassy in Haiti to Evacuate Nonessential Personnel

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — The U.S. Military said Sunday that it had flown in forces to beef up security at the U.S. Embassy in Haiti and allow nonessential personnel to leave. The aircraft flew to the embassy compound, the U.S. Southern Co MMA nd said, meaning that the effort involved helicopters. It was careful to point out that “no Haitians were on board the Military aircraft.” That seemed aimed at quashing any speculation that senior government officials might be leaving as the gang attacks in Haiti worsen. The neighborhood around the embassy in the capital, Port-au-Prince, is largely controlled by gangs. “This airlift of personnel into and out of the Embassy is consistent with our standard practice for Embassy security augmentation worldwide, and no Haitians were on board the Military aircraft,” according to the Southcom statement.
