The Rolling Stones announce release date for their new album and unveil lead single, 'Angry'

The Rolling Stones are back, and they’re “Angry.” LONDON -- The Rolling Stones are back, and they're “Angry.” At least that is the title of the debut single from the band's new album , the first in 18 years to contain a dozen original songs. It's also the first album the band has recorded without drummer Charlie Watts, who died in 2021. The three surviving Stones — Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood — came to east London’s Hackney district on Wednesday to unveil the new album, “Hackney Diamonds" and announce its release date: Oct. 20. Jagger said not all the songs are furious. The album also contains “love songs, ballads, country-type” sounds, he said. Recorded in December and January at studios around the world, the album sees the Stones team up with Grammy-winning producer Andrew Watt. It features drummer Steve Jordan on 10 of the 12 tracks in Watts' place. Two more songs were recorded in 2019 with Watts. Former Stone Bill Wyman also puts in an app...

Daughter of long-imprisoned activist in Bahrain to return in push for release

A daughter of a long-detained human rights activist in Bahrain says she will return to the island nation to press for his release DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- A daughter of a long-detained human rights activist in Bahrain said Thursday she would return to the island nation to press for his release while he and hundreds of other inmates are on a major hunger strike and even though she could be imprisoned as well. The trip by Maryam al-Khawaja draws renewed attention to the plight of her 62-year-old ailing father, Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, a dual Danish-Bahraini national convicted of internationally criticized terrorism charges and held in what a United Nations panel calls an “arbitrary” imprisonment ever since. It also raises the stakes of the monthlong hunger strike in Bahrain just ahead of a planned visit to the United States by Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa. It has become one of the longest-sustained demonstrations of dissent in the decade since Bahrain, aided by Saudi Arabi...

US secures the release of the soldier who crossed into North Korea 2 months ago

The White House says the American soldier who sprinted into North Korea across the heavily fortified border between the Koreas two months ago has been released into U.S. custody WASHINGTON -- The U.S. has secured the release of a U.S. soldier who sprinted across a heavily fortified border into North Korea more than two months ago, the White House announced Wednesday. U.S. ally Sweden and rival China helped with the transfer. Left unanswered were questions of why Pyongyang—which has tense relations with Washington over the North's nuclear program, support for Russia's war in Ukraine and other issues—had agreed to turn him over and why the soldier had fled in the first place. North Korea had abruptly announced earlier Wednesday that it would expel Pvt. Travis King — though some had expected the North to drag out his detention in hopes of squeezing concessions from Washington at a time of high tensions between the two countries. "U.S. officials have secured the return of Pr...

Almog Meir Jan was among hundreds of people who were taken hostage by Hamas on Oct. 7, when the Palestinian militant group launched a surprise attack on Israel. TEL AVIV, Israel -- Almog Meir Jan's smile can be found in every corner of his family's sixth-floor apartment -- in framed photographs sitting on the bookshelf, in pictures hanging on the refrigerator and on banners, posters and T-shirts that his mother had specially made. But Almog hasn't been home in weeks. The 21-year-old Israeli citizen was attending a music festival with friends on Oct. 7 when he was abducted by the Palestinian militant group Hamas, whose fighters stormed into southern Israel from the nearby Gaza Strip and killed over 1,400 people, according to Israeli authorities. It's believed that Almog and more than 200 other hostages were taken back to Gaza, a 140-square-mile territory where 2 million Palestinians have lived under a blockade imposed by neighboring Israel and Egypt since Hamas, which...

Serbia opens proceedings against arrested Kosovo policemen, ignoring US call for their release.

Serbian prosecutors have opened legal proceedings against three Kosovo police officers arrested earlier this week, defying U.S. and other demands for their immediate and unconditional release BELGRADE, Serbia -- Serbian prosecutors on Friday opened legal proceedings against three Kosovo police officers arrested earlier this week, defying U.S. and other demands for their immediate and unconditional release. Serbian officials have said the three Kosovo Albanians were arrested by Serbian security on Wednesday deep inside Serbia and close to the border with Kosovo, and that they were heavily armed when seized. Kosovo officials insist they were “kidnapped” inside Kosovo and taken to Serbia by force. The dispute adds to tensions between the two countries that have flared into recent violent clashes in the Serb-majority north of Kosovo, stirring fears of a renewal of the 1998-99 conflict in Kosovo that left more than 10,000 people dead, mostly Kosovo Albanians. The United States on Thursday j...
