India's moon rover confirms sulfur and detects several other elements near the lunar south pole

India’s moon rover has confirmed the presence of sulfur and detected several other elements on the surface near the lunar south pole a week after the country’s historic moon landing NEW DELHI -- India’s moon rover confirmed the presence of sulfur and detected several other elements near the lunar south pole as it searches for signs of frozen water nearly a week after its historic moon landing, India’s space agency said Tuesday. The rover's laser-induced spectroscope instrument also detected aluminum, iron, calcium, chromium, titanium, manganese, oxygen and silicon on the lunar surface, the Indian Space Research Organization, or ISRO, said in a post on its website. The lunar rover had come down a ramp from the lander of India’s spacecraft after last Wednesday’s touch-down near the moon’s south pole. The Chandrayan-3 Rover is expected to conduct experiments over 14 days, the ISRO has said. The rover "unambiguously confirms the presence of sulfur ,” ISRO said. It also is sea...

Israel tells a million Gazans to flee south to avoid fighting, but is that even possible?

Image
With a ground war on the horizon, Israel has told more than a million people in northern Gaza to flee -- a call the White House has deemed a "tall order." With a potential ground offensive maybe just hours away, Israel has told more than a million people in northern Gaza to flee south to escape the fighting -- a move the United Nations said could have "devastating humanitarian consequences." The Israeli Defense Forces early Friday called for civilians to evacuate to the south of Wadi Gaza, citing plans to "operate significantly" in Gaza City after Hamas unleashed unprecedented terror attacks on Israel this past weekend. The U.S. did not receive word from Israel about the mass evacuation ahead of time, according to a U.S. official. The IDF said it was telling residents to leave "for your own safety and the safety of your families." At the same time, Hamas, which has ruled the Gaza Strip for more than a decade, told civilians to stay put, promp...

Some 5,000 migrants set out on foot from Mexico's southern border, tired of long waits for visas

About 5,000 migrants from Central America, Venezuela, Cuba and Haiti have set out on foot to reach the U.S., walking north from Mexico's southern border TAPACHULA, Mexico -- About 5,000 migrants from Central America, Venezuela, Cuba and Haiti set out on foot from Mexico's southern border Monday, walking north toward the U.S. The migrants complained that processing for refugee or exit visas takes too long at Mexico’s main migrant processing center in the city of Tapachula, near the Guatemalan border. Under Mexico's overwhelmed migration system, people seeking such visas often wait for weeks or months, without being able to work. The migrants formed a long line Monday along the highway, escorted at times by police. The police are usually there to prevent them from blocking the entire highway, and sometimes keep them from hitching rides. Monday's march was among the largest since June 2022. Migrant caravans in 2018 and 2019 drew far greater attention. But with as many a...
