Shell earnings top $5 billion. But that's nearly half what it pulled in months ago

Shell has reported that it earned nearly $5.1 billion in the second quarter LONDON -- Shell reported Thursday that it earned nearly $5.1 billion in the second quarter, nearly half what the oil and natural gas giant pulled in during the first three months of the year as energy prices have plunged. The British energy company said its adjusted earnings followed lower oil and gas prices, production and trading. The figure was down from $11.5 billion in the same period a year ago and $9.6 billion in the first quarter. Oil and gas prices surged last year after Russia invaded Ukraine, fueling i NFL ation around the world and driving record profits for energy companies, including Shell, British rival BP and others. Prices have since fallen amid weak global economic growth and other factors, leading to lower earnings . “Shell delivered strong operational performance and cash flows in the second quarter, despite a lower commodity price environment," CEO Wael Sawan said in a statement. There were thousands of suspected cases of cholera in other parts of the country, UNHCR public Health chief Allen Maina said. “Dozens of children are dying every day — a result of this devastating conflict and a lack of global attention,” U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said. Sudan plunged into chaos...

US secures the release of the soldier who crossed into North Korea 2 months ago

The White House says the American soldier who sprinted into North Korea across the heavily fortified border between the Koreas two months ago has been released into U.S. custody WASHINGTON -- The U.S. has secured the release of a U.S. soldier who sprinted across a heavily fortified border into North Korea more than two months ago, the White House announced Wednesday. U.S. ally Sweden and rival China helped with the transfer. Left unanswered were questions of why Pyongyang—which has tense relations with Washington over the North's nuclear program, support for Russia's war in Ukraine and other issues—had agreed to turn him over and why the soldier had fled in the first place. North Korea had abruptly announced earlier Wednesday that it would expel Pvt. Travis King — though some had expected the North to drag out his detention in hopes of squeezing concessions from Washington at a time of high tensions between the two countries. "U.S. officials have secured the return of Pr...

Friday marks six months since Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was arrested and detained by Russian authorities on espionage charges, allegations that Gershkovich, the WSJ, the U.S. government and dozens of international news organizations have vehemently denied. Gershkovich remains behind bars in Moscow’s notorious Lefortovo prison . In March, Gershkovich, who was an accredited correspondent in Russia, was on a reporting trip in the city of Yekaterinburg, when he was arrested by the country’s powerful FSB domestic intelligence service. The U.S. government has declared Gershkovich wrongfully detained and most experts believe Russia has seized him as a bargaining chip to use as leverage with the United States, similar to other Americans held hostage by the Kremlin, such as the WNBA star Brittney Griner and former Marine Paul W...
